February is heart health awareness month. Heart disease has continued to be the number one cause of death in the US since 1921. (CDC)
There are modifiable risk factors and unmodifiable risk factors. We cannot change our sex, age, or family history, but there are some things we certainly can do to lower our risks of heart disease.
- Avoid tobacco
- Get at least 150 minutes of physical activity weekly
- Eat a heart- healthy diet
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Get quality sleep
- Manage stress
- Know your numbers; get regular health check ups to know your blood pressure, cholesterol and A1C values
